Warning Description: Special Weather Statement
Warning Date: 3:44 PM EST on February 3, 2007
WarningSum:...Very Cold Conditions With Sub Zero Wind Chills Expected Across
The Tri-State From Tonight Through The Middle Of Next Week...
Warning Message:An Arctic front will cross the tri state from mid evening to
around midnight...with Arctic high pressure building in behind it
through the middle of next week. Behind the front overnight blustery
west winds of 15 to 25 mph...with gusts as high as 35 mph will
usher in amongst the coldest air masses of this winter. These
strong winds will continue into Tuesday causing sub zero wind
chills across the region...especially at night.
Low temperatures Sunday morning will generally be from 10 to 15
across the tri- state...with wind chills from 3 to 8 below zero
inland and in the Long Island Pine barrens...and near or just
below zero around the coast. Temperatures will not recover much
during the day on Sunday with highs only from the mid teens to
around 20 inland...and in the lower 20s near the coast...with wind
chills in the single digits. Portions of the lower Hudson Valley
may not even experience wind chills above zero.
It will be even colder Sunday night and Monday as the core of the
cold air builds into the tri-state. Expect lows mainly in the
single digits Monday morning with wind chills from 5 to 10 degrees
below zero...with portions of the lower Hudson Valley having wind
chills approaching 15 below. Highs Monday will generally be in
the teens...with wind chills peaking at near 0 near the coast to
around 5 below inland. Monday night will have lows in the single
digits inland and near 10 near the coast. Wind chills will be from 5
to 10 below near the coast...and 10 to approaching 15 below inland
(coldest in the lower Hudson Valley and interior portions of south
central connecticut).
Temperatures will moderate somewhat Tuesday and Tuesday
night...and the winds will gradually diminish. Expect highs
Tuesday form around 20 to the mid 20s with wind chills peaking in
the single digits. Lows Tuesday night are forecast to be in the
single digits inland and from 10 to 15 near the coast with wind
chills around 0...except around 5 below in the lower Hudson
Valley. The cold weather will continue through the middle of the
week with temperatures not expected to go above freezing until
Thursday...at the earliest...and then mainly near the coast.
Exposure to cold can cause life threatening health conditions.
Avoid serious conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia by
keeping warm. Make sure to wear a hat...Hood or scarf...as most
heat is lost through the head. Also...wear layered clothing...as
layers provide better insulation and warmth. If you or a person
you suspect is suffering from frostbite or hypothermia...seek
medical help immediately or call 911.

significant cold snap.
